My mom got rid of two pieces of clothing one with a cute floral pattern and another with a spary of beaded work. I kept them because I'd like to use the fabric for sewing on different clothing. I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on this. If I cut up some other person's clothing they created would that be wrong? What would you do?

Re: Is it steeling?
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:30 PMdepends on how prolific a sewer the person is and how they will take it. Some of us (me) sew so much that we are happy to get rid of something and if somebody else alters it, more power to them. I'm kind of in the same boat right now, a friend gave me the first thing she ever sewed because she couldn't get the waist right, but I didn't want a skirt that style so I asked if I could make something totally new and she said it was OK, but I've got so many other projects I want to do I wonder if I'll ever get to it. -

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:38 PMThanks for the advice. These are clothes my mom has gotten from HSN or QVC they are mass produced and have brand names.

Re: Is it steeling?
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:33 PMWhy don't you ask her? If she was getting rid of them she probably isn't too attached to them, since you seem worried about it, you should ask. -

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:39 PMMy mom doesn't care what I do with them and she didn't make them. I just feel odd cutting up something someone created.

Re: Is it steeling?
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 4:13 PMJenna,
silly girl, you're on the *Reconstructed Clothing* tribe. That's what reconstructing is... cutting up and altering existing clothing to create something else. it's not stealing. you're not taking their design. you're not shoplifting the original item. it's yours because you paid for it or it was gifted to you. Once you own it you can do whatever you want with it. sometimes that's reconstructing it, sometimes that's deconstructing. sometimes you throw it out. but there's nothing morally or legally wrong with cutting up clothing to reuse the fabric or the garment structure for something else. I mean, that's the definition of reconstructing. -

Sat, February 23, 2008 - 8:53 PMREUSE
before recycle
give the garment new life !
take out what is beautiful from it and reframe it !
it's probably already been knocked off if it's already in mass production. That is not stealing. Stealing would be saying that you did it all yourself, but there is no issue with what you want to do.
go for it already! -

Re: Is it steeling?
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 1:35 PMMy aunt gave me a bunch of Spiegl stuff she had from the 90's - I promptly cut up one linen skirt and made a vest, turned the oversized sweater dress into a wrap front sweater and the other skirts into a cute shirt.
Was she suprised? oh yeah. She was sure that I'd just wear them as is. But when I showed her what I'd made she agreed that they were really nice and she was happy that they'd live another life as another garment. It worked out well for both of us.
I say go for it!

Re: Is it steeling?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 2:52 AMFrom my view, every creation begins with destruction. And one is not "good" nor the other "bad." Both simply are - and both are quite necessary to the other.
So I say: Start cutting and re-creating! DOn't judge--just have fun! :)
