Fri, January 23, 2009 - 1:23 PMI'm glad you asked, because I've been wanting to learn to do this as well. -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Fri, January 23, 2009 - 2:36 PMIt's one of those easy to do, hard to do well things.
You make slits in your fabric, maybe a half inch apart and a few inches wide, running parallel down the back (or wherever)
Then take the second strip created and wrap around the first strip, so that it goes up, over, behind, and back down to it's original place.
Then take the third strip and rap it around the second strip. Then take the fourth strip and wrap it around the third, and so on till you get to the bottom, where you can sew it off.
That's a lot more difficult to explain than it is to do, so let me know if that didn't make sense...
Also, practice on an old shirt before using your beautiful fancy shirt like that one! -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Fri, January 23, 2009 - 9:40 PMso I tried my first one, amen to saving old shirts! two Q's:
1. Do I twist it more than once to make it tighter? It seems to just sorta hang. Maybe I did it too wide or too far apart?
2. How to I get the twisted part to gather towards the middle, like in the pic? Should I pinch it inwards, perhaps? That when it seems loose and I have to twist it several times before moving onto the next section. They kind of settled closer to the outside rather than the inside.
Again, thank you! I have a nice lil' collection of old shirts just begging for this. =) Don't we all! ^_^ -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Sat, January 24, 2009 - 5:35 PMmy attempt at answers...
1. Is your shirt tight on you? It should be for this to look good. Pulling on the strips gives them that nice rounded look, but don't pull hard enough to get them too stretched out.
2. Do you notice how in the picture the slits start out narrow and slowly get wider? I think that's why the wraps are all in a nice line down the middle. Each wrap fits into the one above it, so if the first one is quite thin the wraps of the next ones will be too, regardless of slit width.
does that help?
By the way, I've seen shirts worked into a net like this- try that next!
And if all this is TOO frustrating, you can always make yarn out of your shirts and knit something fun instead...

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Sun, January 25, 2009 - 9:30 PMIt sounds almost like making a crochet chain. Is that right? -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Mon, January 26, 2009 - 5:12 PMIt's a pretty similar idea, yeah.

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 1:15 PMVery much so, or like latching up a dropped stitch in knitting. Pull the second strip through the first. Pull the third strip through the loop made by the second strip. Pull the fourth strip through the loop made by the third strip, and so on, pulling the next strip through the loop made by the previous strip.

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Sun, January 25, 2009 - 10:13 PMI love this style too. I think it works best with very very stretchy shirts and thin strips cut with a razor -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Thu, January 29, 2009 - 11:18 AMI suck, and I didn't quite understand the directions given at the top.
I like the shirt shown in the photo, I'm just at a loss. help! -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Thu, January 29, 2009 - 12:59 PMI made a crap corel picture of how to do it, but it seems like the photo uploading is a bit wonky right now. I'll try again later, but it might go through on its own in this tribe's pictures.
And just because you didn't understand the words doesn't mean you suck. I'm a little amazed that anyone did! But it's actually a lot easier than it sounds... -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Thu, January 29, 2009 - 2:17 PMThank you! =)
Actually your description was easy to understand. =) (on my end anyway.)
I can't wait to go find some stretchy tanks to practice on! Helllo thrift shops! I do have all these T's that are just regular T fabric, a slighty stretchy cotton-poly blend, the kind we all probably have dating back to the good 'ole days. Would love to find some cool ways to rework them, but honor the desgns...like my yard dogs T! Anyone have any ideas they really like? I might make a bag out of it, as I often need something to carry all my daily run-around-town supplies in...or a pillow to crash out on for sweet YDRS dreams. <3...hehe! endless possiblities! ^_^

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 12:33 AMFunny that you should mention making a bag - I just saw a pattern in a sewing catalog for a pattern to make purses out of tees (looked kind of interesting). I've done the pillow thing for my stepkids a few times when they outgrew one that they didn't want to give up. I've also seen quilts and blankets made from printed tees - the possibilities seem endless.

Sun, February 1, 2009 - 10:42 AMFunny that you should mention YDRS- I just saw them a few days ago! Definitely a shirt worth saving, although if the back is blank you could do the design there.

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Sun, February 1, 2009 - 10:43 AMThere's also s tutorial somewhere on the net for making tshirt underwear, for those who REALLY love the design. -

Re: How do I do this? rad t-shirt recon
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 11:44 AMI just wanted to revisit this thread and post a video clip of this technique being done. Warning: it's from Playboy, and the demonstrator is Adam Saaks, the dude who rips up shirts for Ed Hardy, so the stench of Douche is a little distracting and ADD editing makes it a little hard to watch, but if you can separate out the useful material, it's very informative.
www.playboy.com/articles/p.../index.html
There are other clips of him on YouTube, but this is the clearest. He's kind of a one-trick pony, but it's a pretty good trick.
