I just reconstructed a couple of my white jeans and used white faux fur around the bottom of the short skirt.
My question is, how should I hem it? Or maybe, do I need to hem it so that it won't fray?

Re: faux fur question
Mon, December 31, 2007 - 8:40 AMfur is usually a knit, not woven fabric, so it won't fray. if you give it a good brushing to get off the cut fur ends you don't really need to worry about hemming it.
if you want to do something to give it a more finished look, you can run a zig-zag stitch around the cut edge. i wouldn't recommend turning up a hem, since it will make the bottom edge of your skirt too stiff.

Re: faux fur question
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 11:12 AMhow much bulk you'll get from a hem depends on how thick the fur is too. :) I have some sleeve cuffs that I didn't turn under for a hem because it would be too bulky.
you can always do a stay stitch along the bottom to prevent the furr from stretching out of shape or ripping (part the nap like hair, stitch between, brush nap back down. I've found that while it looks sturdy, the backing of faux fur is actually somewhat delicate and easily stretched or ripped.
something to consider: you may want to add a lining to the back fo the furr. it can be kind fo scratchy and also more likely to shed fuzzies onto your legs from the friction against the backing.
if you do a search in the Playalicious Playwear tribe for "faux fur" you'll get all sorts of tips on how to cut and sew with it. -

Re: faux fur question
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 7:37 PMi've made dresses with faux fur hems before and have tried a couple of different things. i think the best approach was to "bind" the hem edge with seam/hem tape, fold the hem under and stitch in the ditch to hold the hem up in place. -

Re: faux fur question
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 8:18 AMIf you must hem it you could use bias tape around the edge.
I've had the best luck just running a line of Fray Check along the outer edge. -

Re: faux fur question
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 12:10 AMi wouldn't hem... it adds bulk and fucks with what minimal drape fun fur has to begin with.
You could even use a simple non water soluble glue on the inside if you wanted to stop any potential fray, but after you have picked the fur out of your connecting seam, just cut the edge, comb or brush or tape to remove excess fuzz, and end as such.
unless you are lining that shit, don't turn it under - too much effort for too little return

Re: faux fur question
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:56 PMThanks for the great suggestions.
Since the Crown Royal bag vest, turned shirt was a hair to small for him (It fits me but I am still trying to figure out buttons from the caps) he wants a bear suit for Burning Man.
I added white faux fur to the white pants I cut offs and it's what originally started my interest. A bear suit is going to be a bit more of a project than that, though.

Re: faux fur question
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:40 PMI second the bias tape suggestion. I don't like to leave anything un hemmed. Thats one of the advantages to using a lining with fake fur, you have the lining seam instead of a hem. When I do hem fur I either use bias tape or I roll up a small amount and hem by hand in addition to bias tape. Another thing I did with fur that I'm really happy with was sew two strips with the grain going towards each other. I did that with some really bulky fur on my husband's coat and it made it drape beautifully. -

Re: faux fur question
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:49 PMheres a link to the coat I was talking about- see how at the bottom there is a strip of fur with the grain going down on both the exterior and the interior? the lining "Floats" at the bottom and the blue lining fur is hemmed with silky bias tape. -

Re: faux fur question
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 10:48 PMThat looks great. I like the silky bias tape idea. Thanks. He bought me a bear suit pattern but hasn't chosen the fur. I think he would really like glow fur. Does anyone know of a source? -

Re: faux fur question
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 1:02 PMI found this when I was looking for something else, but its wholesale:
www.giftstart.com.tw/eindex.htm
If someone had the investment money they could probably make a fortune selling it retail to burners and other assorted freaky people. I've had this idea for a while of starting a fabric and notions buying club, but not only am I too lazy and don't have the space, but, like all other sewers, I have too much fabric already, I broke my own one project at a time rule when JoAnns of all places had fake fur on clearance for ( I am not making this up) $2 a yard . Its like crack.
