Funkin' up t-shirts

Any ideas what to do with t-shirts that are in pretty good shape to begin with, but just too boring? I like the graphics on the front, so don't want to mess with them, and I want to wear the shirts as they are, but want to make them more funky. Wish I had a surger, but I don't. :)

if you use a contrasting thread with a really tight zig zag stitch along a cut edge you can make it look good and sorta 'surger' like.

or weave ribbon into the shoulders so when you wash them the ribbon get all crumplie.

and just cutting out random shapes is good to, like a key hole in the neck or slits along the shoulders.

and i also like to make them into skirts if they are big enough...

      I like the skirts idea.

the ribbon made me think of stitching lace either horizontally (kind of like bloomers) or vertically down the shirt kind of frilly tuxedo shirt-like. It really depends on where the graphic is.

I just cut out the cool design and then zig zag applique it on to a t-shirt that fits me and that i like - i've even added the appliques to sweaters, cardigans and skirts

I had a shirt that said "gotcha" on it with a cheesy looking heart that I liked, but the shirt was too short. I took the sleeves off and sewed them onto an old tank top. Then I cut out the graphic and sewed it onto the tank top as a front pocket.

Now it is a turquoise shirt with red sleeves and a red pocket. Very eighties/fifth gradish......

I personally think it is hilarious, but my husband claims it is hideously ugly and he's usually pretty honest...but as long as I KNOW I am wearing something hideous, I am not above wearing it.

Maybe if the colors weren't so bold....

Yeah - it works great on a sweater - especially if it is tight-weave (haven't tried it on a loose weave sweater yet) -- my favorite that i've done so far has an orange tattoo-inspired dragon wrapped around the side of cardigan - it was on this HUGE t-shirt .. i posted a picture in the gallery :)

i did that zig zag thing with my son's batman shirt when he outgrew it--i cut out the logo and sewed it onto a yellow and black striped t-shirt and it's so much cooler than the old shirt was.

the problem you will have without a serger is that the jersey fabric will stretch when you're sewing it and you will get a wavy seam or hem. i got a machine with differential feed just because i sew with knits a lot. the effect can be used to your advantage if you like a flared, wavy edge.

i'm sorry i never got around to posting the picture of the Michael Bolton skirt i made, i haven't been able to find the .jpg in my computer. but i get a lot of comments and laughs when i wear it. i got the idea right here in this tribe, i even turned the sleeves inside out as pockets.

Wow, a Michael Bolton skirt....that's the coolest thing I've heard of since the Texas Chainsaw BBQ....

I have to find one of those Achy Breaky Heart Billy Ray Cyrus shirts now.

I bought a cool but too little t shirt and made it even smaller. It was bright yellow with a cartoonish chic in bellbottoms and devil horns. Underneath it said "hottie". So I cut away the neck, the sleeves, and a bit off the bottom. I wear it over a "husband beater" . I always get compliments on my 5 dolar tee.

I got this pink and hot pink striped oversized 2X tee at Salvation Army for $3.

I brought it home and made a...

    tube minidress
    armwarmers
    legwarmers
    head bandana
    dust mask
and I just found out today that I can take those last two and fashion a halter top out of them. I've never felt so resourceful in my life.
    Thank you giant T-shirt!

    two books to check out:

    Generation T: www.amazon.com/gp/product...047-2720869

99 Ways to Cut, Sew, Trim, and Tie Your T-Shirt into Something Special: www.amazon.com/gp/product...047-2720869

    LOTS of fun ideas!

Dont worry too much about not having a serger. Zig zag will do what you need, and its FINE if it looks more handmade. A twin needle will work, too, for a more 'finished' tee hem. And then there's always hand stitching! Generation T has *excellent* instructions for this.

Which of these books is better???

I lean towards the conservative side, I'm not one that like to show a lot of skin.

      Thanks in advance!

you can slice it horizontally on the sides or the back ( about 1-2 inches for length of each strip) , then knot those strips together to make a more fitted t if you want to give the shirt more shape

definitely recut the neck and arms to flatter you

everythig else i have to offer has already been posted

I took a T that I loved but wanted to be more fitted. I removed the seems on both sides (like the bottom 6-12 inches or so, depending on length of the . Then I cut 1 inch wide slits about 2 inches deep along the sides equal in the front and back then knotted the matching slits together. You could also do this on one side to make one side swoop up, a more modern twist on the old T-shirt clips.

I'm kinda average curvy and Women's baby tees usually fit great but men's tees are a nightmare. I was going to post links to what I do with the ill fitting smocks but I have way too many. Most famously I've made a bating suit. I'm most proud of that. What I do with Tee Shirts is to pretty much dissect them and treat the fabric as if it were regular yard goods. That way you can make ANYTHING, and if you need more fabric, you just find another tee.
