I have a high crew neck dress and I'd like to change the neckline. I'm sure a scoop neck would be difficult given the inner-curve issue, but that would be my preference. Otherwise, a straight cut down the front and then folding under for a v-neck might be the next best option. Anyone have suggestions on the best way to do this? :)

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 6:21 PMWhat I know from my experience with knit necklines is that you want to cut a smaller opening than you think you want.
That & staystitch the new style line right away. You could probably create a new binding from the fabric you cut away. -

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 7:29 PMI'd suggest just chalking the scoop neckline while wearing the item. you might want to staystitch the new neckline before cutting to make it easier to manage the fabric. Have you sewn with knits before?
I agree with Adele, start with a somewhat smaller opening than you think you'd want (you can always make it bigger). and you can probably make a binding from the cut fabric. :) -

Re: Converting a crew
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 7:38 PMi agree with adele and ms dyno: mark the cut line while wearing the item, do a stay stitch before cutting... but i will suggest that you sew in some clear elastic with the initial stay stitch... this will help you once you cut it to check that it is what you want (the cutting smaller is tricky... it can be TOO small... but good advice in general, cut smaller than you think) because there will be some cling to the cut.
clear elastic is available on the packet peg wall at joanns fabrics, ugh, but if you can find it on the roll in a narrow size. michael levine's carries it on the roll in the back utility notions on the wall.
