What about old cotton shirts?
I have some cool shirts that were handed down to me but they are a little big...I want to make them more baby doll with princess sleeves or any other more flattering shapes. Any suggestions?

Slap a baby doll T down on a paper bag. Trace it, then add a seam allowance and cut it out. Pin the pattern to your Tshirt, cut it out, turn the two pieces right-side-in, pin together, and stitch it up. I got a really cute Spiderman Tshirt from a thrift store that was done like this. If its tight and just a little stretchy, you can get away with a not-completely-perfect pattern. Because it doesn't drape, it can't hang wrong.

    hey rachel......
i know this is WAYYYYY after the fact but i just joined this tribe!
i do this alot.....i'd say 3/4 my shirts are reconstructed old tees....

most of them are tanks.....i cut the shirt straight across, pit to pit, then take in the side seams to fit my torso/ length etc.....then using the remainder of the shirt i make straps to complete the tank.....
i have done braided straps, straps fed through grommets then tied, halter style straps, top tied, solid basic straps....grosgrain ribbon, seam-binding straps....you can go on forever......

you can also use the basic tube top bodice, then add 3" or 4" "straps" to make it a square neck tee....or add sleeves to make it a babydoll style....

    good luck....

another thing to do with big ol' tshirts is to cut them into geometric type shapes and sew them altogether for a fab. skirt. buncha t's same color looks dashing.

A friend of mine got me a Legolas t-shirt from Hot Topic. I'm going to make a messenger bag with it.

I have a few vintage t's from my mom, but they are x small's, and I am so not. I wanted to do something with them, but I am not sure what yet. I could make a bag but I'd like to keep it as a shirt but it is sooo tiny. One I really want to redo is a cool vintage t from a comic in Austin, Tx. Any ideas??

if you like to show skin, you can cut the seams in place where it stretches. i'll cut a slice right up the sleeves on short sleeved shirts that are too small. also, you can wear them as a stretch shirt on top of fuller shirts. you can cut up the seam and safety pin in an extra slice of fabric (or sew in, if you sew). or cut out the front and back and pin on (or sew on) a shirt that fits you the way you like. i've cut the sleeves of shirts that don't fit right, wear the "tank-top" on top of shirts i do, and cut the sleeves into arm bands or bracelets

I had a red shirt with a black dragon that was too small, so I riped open the seams and put about an inch of doubled over black mesh down each side around the collar (which i'd cut) and around the sleves. It looks way better now; always get compliments when I wear it. If it is something more girly try ribbon or srips of another tshits.

also try putting the stitching on the outside by hand in a loop stitch. add a couple of slashes on various parts of the shirt, stitched up the same way and you have a prety nifty shirt. i call it the scarred shirt.

The scarred shirt sounds like it would kick ass if the stitches were in something large (like cording or something) in a markedly contrasting color.
